A print, not a painting — the distinction matters, because secondary sources routinely list this as a canvas. It is one of the few works by Ljuba in a major American museum collection, and the Art Institute catalogues him under his exhibiting name alone: “Ljuba, French, born Yugoslavia, 1934”. The sheet is pencil-signed and numbered from an edition of sixty.
The estate’s catalogue raisonné is the authority on titles, dimensions and authenticity — see ljuba.fr.
Erotic · 1972 — 1975
Twenty-three large paintings at the Galerie de Seine in 1972, catalogued by André Pieyre de Mandiargues and Etiemble. Mandiargues set him against Dalí that year in the formulation that stuck: the painter of the warm hand, against an ice-cold skill.
